dashPunk: Captain Robert and Public displays of Affection

Eric, did you check the time stamp on his post. Did you see the disclaimer that it was not about being anti-gay or even anti-PDA he just really hates it when band practice gets disrupted. Have you looked through the subsequent comments on the journal entry by Nathan, Fans, and Robert himself.

In my opinion with the wording he used, combined with it being posted on April 1st, and Nathan joining in on the shenanigans in the comments area with Robert and the Fans i'm going to call this one an April Fools prank post. They seem to be having quite a bit of fun with it in the comments area of his LJ.

Yes, but since I had a dozen conversations with "people" saying the same thing because of the GLBT in Fandom panel we are setting up with Shoreleave, I was in no mood to read it.

It might be a funny joke to some, but as someone who has to deal with people making actual claims like that, it is not.

Bad taste is bad taste. He wants to make a bad gay joke, then expect me to take it seriously and reply in kind.

I love a good April fools joke but when in print the tradition is to post clearly after the joke at the bottom APRILS FOOLS so that everyone can get the context.

See the thing is, is that he specifically states it's not meant to be about gays or a homophobic comment. That it's about PDA's specially during practice or during songs. I don't believe the same ruckus would of been raised had it been about Nathan and either of the female members or about Danielle and one of the female members.

Honestly, your probably right, I wouldn't be raising a ruckus if it had been a joke involving one of the female members, and that is because I am have not been rubbed raw on that issue.

The fact remains that I got upset because the language he used was accidentally similar to language in several emails I had dealt with earlier that day. I have nothing against Robert or Abney Park. You know I am a big fan. I will continue to listen to and buy their music, and I hope to see them in concert on their next go around.

I am a bit overly sensitive about gay jokes at the moment. And lets face it, his post wouldn't have had the same impact at all without the Bi-with-Beer angle and photos he included. My point was simply that it never crossed his mind how others might be affected.

I have contacted Captain Robert and I hope to clear the air about all of this.

This was a "Think before you Speak" post for which I should have thought more before I spoke, and perhaps been a little clearer.

I can understand your view and concern.
However, when I read his post. April Fools or not...
He sounds like me. I don't mind public displays of affection. And I don't care what you do when we are at play or when we are just hanging out... but when I'm trying to work... don't freakin' play around! Don't dance and spin and hopscotch! Don't be making googly eyes and blow air kisses and spray each other with water guns!!!! Just get where you are supposed to be and get the job done!! Interruptions irritate me to no end.

In my opinion... the post he made as is, if he was serious... seems like he was irritated with the playing around. He probably would have been mad no matter who was making out in the middle of rehearsal.

One issue that hasn’t been brought up is the irritating way that “new love” of anything affects people and makes them annoying to be around. Ever have to sit next to a person at work who just found a new religion? It doesn’t matter what religion it is, they go on and on about it and all the details that they’ve learned and invite you to become apart of it because they are just so in love! Lovebirds can be the same way. Not to say that I’m a jaded old married lady. I still love my husband very much, but we also aren’t trying to eat each other’s face every time we’re in public. Perhaps their obsessive touchy-feely phase just got on Capt. R’s nerves one too many times. I know when I’m on the subway and there is a couple next to me (same sex or not) smacking so loudly I can’t even concentrate on reading a book… I tend to get testy. Especially when the car is full and there’s no where to move. Should I be less irritated if they happen to be two chicks because their love is thought by some to be forbidden? I think not. It’s the act and not the players that are driving me INSANE!

As far as the kids go... well, some people don't like people (whether they be straight, gay, bi, or other...) to show sexual passion for one another in front of children. I think it's something they are brought up with. Somehow people got it in their minds that passion is evil. I blame THAT little issue on western religion, but let's not get into that. Now, if they were exposing body parts and actually having sex in front of the kids... that's a different subject. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Not to cheapen this issue in any way, but after reading his post, the thing that bothered me most about it was the pic of Nathaniel w/out his steampunk extensions on! WTF??? Now THAT's disturbing.
