That's the fact the author can't multiply. If 1' goes to 100', then 200' goes to 20,000', NOT 2000'! You lost a zero there bud! :-)

Re:

By his look, you assume he can only play mean and crotchety. But in Pompeii, he was very human and could obviously do vulnerable.

Course, I'm not saying the Doctor needs to be vulnerable. He just obviously needs a range.

SPOILERS!?

I haven't seen "The Day of the Doctor" yet, so I don't know how a type like Capaldi was needed. I've heard mention that something happens in the episode that demands a certain kind of Doctor.

Does that mean he needs to be on more of a war-footing, thus a tougher doctor? Or, is he going to be more of a older-uncle type like Hartnell?

Frankly it would be need to see a kind of Older-Uncle/Grandfather type. Like Gandalf or Dumbledore.

Granted, you can't answer any of these questions without divulging spoilers. Of course you can mention them for the others in this thread that have seen "Day of the Doctor". So if you do so, just please put a big SPOIERS alert.

(And yes, I need to finish up the last Tennant season, and make my way through all the Smith ones. But I know that won't take long and, like everyone else, I'll have months to wait to see Capaldi)

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

Ha! That's me exactly. Loved, loved loved Amy Pond from the start. Rory had to grow on me, even though he didn't annoy me... it wasn't until Centurion days that I saw him in the right light. Him guarding Amy like that? I suddenly wanted him on a tee shirt. heh And River? She's fantastic. It broke my heart when her end came, I wanted her to stay on the fringes of the storyline for the next five incarnations. :/ Yeah, I'm selfish like that.

Returning to horror roots will be somewhat difficult. This generation is not as easily frightened by low budget monsters as the original series' audience. In order to truly pull it off, they'd have to increase the budget to a point that, I fear, would prematurely end the show. I mean, there are fans galore, but are there enough to cover that kind of budget permanently? I keep thinking about Farscape. Tons of fans, but not enough to continue the show because paying to operate the animatronics alone required a shit ton of money every single episode. I mean, six operators for Rygel alone, and that doesn't include his voice actor. That's why it was pulled... budget, not lack of interest. I don't want to see that happen to the Doctor. I worry.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

Holy moses... I need to rewatch that ep. I must've forgotten, it's been so long since I saw it. I'll catch it, I'm sure it'll be in the rerun lineup soonish. Thanks for the reminder.

Agreed about Tennant and his magic. They are all the Doctor, but some are just outstanding. I literally wept when David left.

I don't listen to audiobooks because they put me to sleep, doesn't matter what the book is about. I now wish more than ever that that wasn't the case, because I would love to listen to former Doctors. I would be willing to try again just to hear John Hurt. I don't believe Eccleston would ever agree to it, sadly. He's taken his stance, and I'm guessing that if he were willing whatsoever, he'd have been in Day of the Doctor. I held out hope he'd do it until it was clear he would not. Sigh. I wish he would change his mind.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

"It's just so moving to see a fictional character that cares so much
about humanity, but also needs humanity. This is why I love the Doctor so very much.

It is thrilling to me to see another Whovian born. Once you've worked your way through all of Tennant and Smith to get to the recent specials, I'll be curious to know what you think of the Day of the Doctor and The Night of the Doctor. I'm currently antsy wondering if I'll love or hate the newest incarnation.

I saw that appearance on the Graham Norton show, and loved it. Watched it three times - twice on my own, and saved it to watch it with Beth. I'm seriously wishing I'd never deleted it from the TiVo. That was stupid of me.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

Interesting not, Peter Capaldi, the next Doctor played Caecilius in the Fires of Pompeii.

Tennant brought a magic to the series that it didn't have since Tom Baker played the Doctor.

I love the Audiobooks. Especially the ones about former Doctors since they get the original actors to read them. This could be a great opportunity to do more Christopher Eccleston, and I would love some John Hurt "War Doctor" books too. It may be that I just love to hear John Hurt talk.

Graham Norton is awesome.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

I feel your pain. It took me a while to get into Matt Smith. I loved Amy Pond from day one, and well, every episode River is not in makes me a little sad. haha.

I have High Hopes for the series. I hope that the show will return to its horror roots with the change in doctors.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

Right now I just finished the Fires of Pompei.

And I am ABSOLUTELY enjoying it more and more. I'm totally obsessed now. And as much as I loved Eccleston, Tennant's Doctor is absolutely superb. Never been so drawn ,more to a fantasy/sci-fi/comic character.

Also going crazy with the merchandise, ebooks, audio books and radio dramas.

It's just so moving to see a fictional character that cares so much about humanity, but also needs humanity. Such a great mixture of happy-go-lucky, wide-eyed childishness with super-serious, don't-mess-with-me attitude. Makes other genre heroes like Spiderman, Superman and Captain Kirk so cold in comparison.

And BTW, just loved the recent appearance Tennant and Smith made on Graham Norton.

(And that's another new obsession. Watching so much Graham Norton on YouTube. And now would really like to visit England as well.)

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

I'm curious as well, and sad he left so soon. He was a great Doctor. I have to say, though, I ADORE Tennant's Doctor. Smith's Doctor had to grow on me, after those two I think I had a bit of shock and difficulty adapting to him all arms and legs akimbo all the time. And about the time I decided I loved him, along came news he was leaving. Sigh. I'm wondering how far you've made it at this point, and if you're enjoying it more as you go.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

Just finished the first season of the new series. Just loved it. Especially "Father's Day," the "Empty Child" episodes, and the "Bad Wolf" episodes. So good, but often emotionally draining to watch.

I don't think I've had the same emotional connection with any American produced sci fi or other genre series. Is it possible Americans are more uncomfortable with melodrama / emotion in their genre stories than the reputedly stiff upper lip Brits.

I'm absolutely hooked. And miss the Eccleston Doctor already. Shame he didn't want to continue. Curious what differences he had with the producers / execs.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

I totally forgot about Bradley being on Game of Thrones. He was really good on there, and I also hope he will get a wider variety of part after this.

As far as whether you will enjoy Day of the Doctor without seeing more Tennant and Smith... That is difficult. The significance of Rose could be missed, and the many references to River Song as well. That is a hard one to answer.

Since, part of this story happens at the same Time as the special, End of Time, it might profit you to watch it first, but I think it stands on its own.

Moffat made such a love letter to the series, and unlike so many Doctor Who stories, this one is character based and honestly make me want to rewatch all the new series in light of these events. It might do that for you too.

Re: Fandom Today 550- The Day of the Podcast

Thanks for featuring these movies. I've been a marginal Dr. Who fan. I was much into Tom Baker when I was younger. But the recent stuff, only caught some of the Eccleston season.

But I REALLY enjoyed "An Adventure..." Such a class production. And yes, very tear-jerking at times. And it made me want to see more performances by David Bradley. I haven't seen anything by him outside of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones (and World's End), but now I want to see more. And I hope he gets offered other roles other than "mean ole bastard" roles.

I want to move onto "The Day...," but wonder if you think I'd enjoy it more if I waited till I saw some (or all) of the Tennant and Smith seasons. .

I'm also curious if any of the older crew or cast involved with "An Adventure..." have fond memories of the first Dr. Who seasons, and therefore were especially joyful about being a part of such a monumental part of their childhood and British culture.

Re:

It deepens the connection and understanding of the story and gives another layer of value.
I've always seen digital fiction as more of a way to promote other work (a physical book etc) or to get my name out there.
