Sanctuary: The Abnormal Reality of A Vampire Squid
So I can see where you're getting that from io9 (they are a Gawker blog, after all: Shitstirring is what they do) but as the most prolific blogger at CJ I don't pretend to present anything other than my own opinion when I say things like that. I certainly don't believe there is one right way to be a fan - I have never been one to buy the 'true fan' mentality, and neither has the club as a whole. We started as an EU discussion list before the PT and thus have folks who fell on every side of the fence, so there is no One CJ Prequel Opinion, and I certainly won't put forth my own as it.
Anyway, if I was on the hater train, I'd have a LOT of things to get to before the prequels, which I'm mostly fairly neutral on. Don't love them, but I don't hate them either. I have no problem accepting them as an important ingredient in the Star Wars franchise. They're just not my preferred flavor is all. If you subscribe to 'hate' being a lack of abject adoration, then I guess you're on point. If not... Then I'm still kind of confused.
Plus, if I actually hate something, long experience with fandom has taught me the less said the better. ;)
Honestly, I find the black and white, fans and haters, debate-until-someone-turns-blue thing extremely tedious, which is probably why I run ClubJade.net as a news blog instead of a debate one, and why I only post long rambly opinion pieces at 4am once in a blue moon. I won't be doing a 'why I hate' post on CJ - though I might link one in a fandom minute with or without a brief snark - because what's the point? There are no ads on CJ, nor are there likely to be, so shitstirring for more hits would do little but piss people off without any of the benefits. And anyway, that's what Livejournal and personal blogs are for - and CJ is most certainly not my personal blog.
I want people to start ignoring the hatemongers at io9 and all of their imitators. The comic book guy is funny on the Simpsons, but we don't need so many (not to mention such a high profile one) out there stinking up the place.
I try not to write rant posts. I usually only do it when something snaps inside me and I'm mad as hell and not willing to take it anymore.
I love Club Jade, it is one of my favorite blogs. I am sorry if I upset you. I didn't intend to attack you, just the annoyance that is io9. I apologize if I didn't say that forcibly enough.
Keep up the good work, and should I go "bat crap crazy" again, I will be sure to focus on the target better.
I wouldn't call it hate, but they are meant to provoke and get people worked up, in the name of Denton's almightly dollar. I read several of the Gawker properties, and they're hit or miss - but I think it's important to keep an eye on them, particularly in when one is in 'our' field. (I'm terribly pragmatic about these things for someone not making any money, I'm afraid.)
Comic Book Guys, unfortunately, are part of the territory: But I'm gad you think we're doing okay at CJ.
And after their post this week about rebooting Star Wars, and completely going against everything they've made jest of in the past about bad remakes, how they should leave well enough alone... Well, that pretty much showed me they're just a bunch of hypocrites, if nothing did before.
Thanks for writing this. It felt refreshing to read.
